This group started with my article about my son's (Brandon) - 13 y/o) first poem entitled "Where I Am From - Brandon L.". I found the poem to not only be a touching piece, but I also thought it would be a great way for ALL Gather members . . .

This group started with my article about my son's (Brandon) - 13 y/o) first poem entitled "Where I Am From - Brandon L.". I found the poem to not only be a touching piece, but I also thought it would be a great way for ALL Gather members to put "pen" to their own biographical poems. In doing so, I thought the process would be a great way to discover even more about ourselves and our fellow writers. I hope everyone joins in the fun.

Here's Brandon's original piece:

"To my son Brandon on the eve of Thanksgiving. Brandon - who through scattered moments of brilliance sees, as I once did, in the flash of a shooting star; white-hot light and with extreme clarity, brings to me such reason for thanks-giving. Dear son, so close you are to my heart and soul, that only nature can tell us apart. Know we have suffered at times in darkness, yet still, have achieved mighty things and will achieve many more in our moments of brilliance. After-all, just look, I achieved YOU!"

Where I Am from - Brandon L.


I am from roses and an oak tree.
The sweet smell of roses from climbing
the broad branches of an oak tree.

I am from the cactus on my table.
I am from Aspen trees and the big wall.
The smell of ham in the morning
and the taste of taco shells at night.

My brother Logan's great athletics,
to my brother Casey's over-dramatizing.
My Dad's strictness, to my Mom's gentle touch.

As we say in the Likes family: "Great minds think alikes."

This is where I am from.

Note: I would like to challenge (on Brandon's behalf) all of my friends to write their own "Where I Am From" poem/piece/article and publish it here on Gather. I think it would be telling and a great way to share ourselves with each other in Brandon's unique way.

IMPORTANT: Please make sure you entitle AND tag it "Where I Am from - your name", so we can all easily find each other's offerings.

Also, I would like to ask each one of you to try to include at least one picture in the article itself (more are welcomed), that best describes what it is you're trying to communicate. What picture(s) best describes "Where YOU Are From?" Make it/them relate to your piece as best you can.

So, there you have it.

I hope someday to come back and make a collection of these pieces to possibly put into a book about each one of you that responds to this challenge. Give me your BEST work here and REALLY paint a picture for us.

This writing experience can only help our Gather community have a better, more "personal" look into us as people.
